When facilitating a circle clave is a common pattern to play. In it’s fullness it provides a lot of opportunities for expression, groove, and creativity

But drummers with less experience and rhythmic awareness might struggle with the syncopation in this pattern. One can look at this grid and quick identify the syncopated notes and which notes generate the most tension. It is then an option to subtract one or more of those notes for a while while a less experienced drummer develops confidence in what they’re playing.$$Graphic 15-2:

This is much easier to follow. And this:$$Audio 15-2: Clave without the 1a at 100bpm$$$$Graphic 15-3: Simplified Clave 2 - 3,3,2$$

Contains 3 of the 5 pillars of the 3/2 clave but only contains one syncopated note. (This is also 3,3,2 at the 8th note of resolution) The tension is clearly communicated by saying that the pillars are on the 1, 2&, and 4, whereas it would be less so to say the pillars are on the 1, 4, and 7, OR the 1 and 4 of bar 1 and the 3 of bar 2
