Drum and Dance Gatherings
Shared Rhythm Experiences for Health, Personal Growth, and Community
The mission is to encourage health, wellness, connection, and inspiration in individuals and communities through the facilitation of shared rhythm experiences.
Drum and Dance Gatherings
With the assistance of the Indiana Arts Commission, the Indiana University Center for Rural Engagement, and local and regional arts organizations, Rhythm Arise will provide shared rhythm experiences to communities throughout the region. Through the program, Indiana residents will have an opportunity to explore the ancient global practice of shared creation through music and dance as a means of forming greater understanding of themselves, their neighbors, and cultures all over the world. Shared rhythm experiences create opportunities for warm, meaningful, human connections. In addition to smiles, laughter, and inspiration, the universal language of rhythm reminds us of our shared humanity and creates opportunities to form relationships that transcend cultural identity.
These events include a 90 minute workshop where participants will:
- get hands on experiences with world percussion instruments
- learn about the global and historic ubiquity of rhythm as a tool for personal and community development
- explore how rhythm can be experienced in our bodies
- learn some basic concepts of rhythm
- learn how to participate in a co-created, shared rhythm experience
After the workshop, participants are invited to kick off their shoes and put what they’ve learned into practice by participating in a co-creative shared rhythm experience. Instruments. are provided so all participants need to bring is warm smiles and their creative, shining selves.
Drum and dance circles have been a global human activity for thousands of years. They promote creativity, health, a sense of well-being and make the social fabric of our communities stronger and healthier. Drum and dance circles aren’t a common and regular activity in American culture and many people who would benefit from this activity don’t have access to them. Rhythm Arise is aimed at hosting and facilitating drum and dance circles for people of all experience levels (including no experience) in order to encourage health, wellness, connection, and inspiration in individuals and communities.
